nicole & dan are married!

By | Weddings | 7 Comments

my birthday week came to a close at nicole & dan’s wedding and since i’d been celebrating pretty much all week i was quite prepared to celebrate more! i arrived at the W- incidentally the perfect place to begin any party- and nicole immediately introduced me around. the room was full of family and close friends all talking and smiling and enjoying adorable tiny sandwiches. nicole’s sense of humor made it easy for me to enjoy shooting all day- she had us all laughing out loud with her offhand comments! literally, LOLing. i should hire her to write this blog. AND redesign this blog- LET ME JUST TELL YOU- she’s got an amazing design sense and it took a serious ‘discussion’ with matt for me to realize that i cannot include every single picture of every detail of her wedding. let’s get back to the tiny sandwiches at the W- hair and makeup was in full swing and since the guys didn’t need matt for another hour he was able to grab the rings and nicole’s dress and capture some killer details! this is my favorite ring shot taken on an old typewriter at the bar:

meanwhile the girls (and i) were laughing and generally relaxing and enjoying the day- love this next series of nicole and her bridesmaids:

before the guys started getting ready matt met up with them and they all made their way up to the roof to make some amazing images! the day was so cold the water from the pool was steaming- pretty:

after all of the finishing touches we jumped into a trolly bound for the king plow arts center– where the ceremony and reception was held. when we walked in we headed straight to the site to check on the decor. mark thompson, floral stylist for christopher confero luxe event design and a friend of nicole’s from design school worked with christopher to lovingly craft an environment with nicole in mind. she knew the general concept of their design but many of the details were a surprise- i think i was excited as everyone else when we were greeted with this perfect entry table!

nicole & dan’s wedding was illuminated by HUNDREDS of candles and to complete the glowing, romantic atmosphere, a dreamy golden tree was projected at the altar. i’d never seen anything like it before- the candlelight flickered off the old bricks and glistened at the edges of more than one set of eyes. the effect was intimate and calming. (attn photo nerds: we shot the ceremony at 6400 ISO at 1/40th of a second)

after the ceremony we had a few minutes to grab some portraits before the reception. it was freezing outside so after a few one light portraits around the grounds we decided to embrace the cold for the last few shots and capture the breath that came out in a puff of white with each exhale. the resulting images are pretty intense:

meanwhile the guests were enjoying the beautiful hors d’oeuvres and sparkling beverages that define bold american catering. they clustered around high tables with natural arrangements of perfect buds in re-purposed glass- glowing with the flickering warm light of yet MORE candles. so glad we had a second to grab some shots of the decor before the party started!

nicole & dan entered to deafening applause and cheers with grins stretched across their faces. the celebration was joyful and there was plenty of dancing and laughing! here are a few of our favorite shots:

just before the end of the evening we snuck nicole & dan out for just a few more images of the two of them. i love capturing just a few portraits at the end of the wedding day- after everything is over and there are no more details to worry about- it’s so natural and relaxed.

nicole & dan, thank you so much for allowing us to photograph such a beautiful day! we enjoyed getting to know you guys more as well as your families- capturing it all was great! we wish you both the very best!

making a house into a home

By | Personal | 5 Comments

it is a blessing that matt and i are afflicted with the same obsessions (passions?). photography, culture, food, craft, etc and now- architecture. we bought our little two bedroom, one bathroom house this past july as the cornerstone of our 5 to 7 year master plan but once we moved in, a love for our little pocket of the city grew- and we gleefully pushed our little plan off a cliff. we were instantly intrigued by the beauty and possibility of old homes and at the recommendation of some of our most brilliant friends and family members we bought a couple of books to learn about the theories of making a ‘home.’

and now we’re pumped! to say the least. we share new ideas most days at breakfast and usually also after matt gets out of the shower- where he does his most creative thinking, of course. ;) we end up walking around the house with our arms spread out roughly measuring and plotting new windows and nooks. we are lucky that we have such a sweet little floor plan to build our ideas upon and create new efficient spaces perfectly suited to our way of living. of course, it’s all just dreams and speculation right now as we save save save to finance this thing but that’s okay- since our ideas change daily getting started now might stifle the more creative ideas that could come later. that being said, we’re having an awesome time spitballing crazy dreams for stairs and ways to bend natural light to our advantage. we’ve started home inspiration folders and we’re always looking for new blogs and websites with a nod toward the renovated and customized old home.

anyway, we’re excited to chronicle some of our house projects on this blog! hopefully, this is the start of moving back to more personal posts in general because this year we’re determined to have a bit of a life outside of our business. :) it’s not easy because we do love our job so much- honestly, i run straight to the computer every morning to see what new, exciting emails we’ve gotten from all of you while we’ve been asleep! but we’re starting to learn to balance other things we love with our business, like sunshine and other people and architecture and thrift stores ;) and we’re planning on 2010 being a fulfilling balance of our passions. so, here’s to 2010, may it be epic!

katie & blain are married!

By | Weddings | One Comment

after a whirlwind holiday season full of fun and little pockets of relaxation, we were energized and ready to start 2010 with katie & blain’s wedding! the air was ice cold and bright blue when we pulled into washington, georgia the morning of january 2nd. matt and i arrived with just enough time to grab breakfast together before we got started. it was a peaceful way to start the year, sitting across from one another, sipping coffee, eating biscuits and soaking in the fact that we pretty much have the best job ever. ;) when i arrived at the historic fitzpatrick hotel in downtown washington i was immediately excited by the beauty of the building and even more surprised when i ventured inside! everything was so beautifully and creatively restored and the backdrop it provided for our images was just stunning. katie had definitely thought that through- well, katie is one of those people who has thought everything through! she’s super organized, creative and inspired but also quite peaceful. her wedding day started in a beautiful place surrounded by her closest friends and family- what a way to kick off the year!

katie made sure we had plenty of time for portraits of all kinds! we enjoyed the room where she got ready so much that we started there. it was beyond freezing outside but katie & blain were prepared and we finished up couple portraits with chattering teeth beneath our grins. SO WORTH IT! three thumbs up for katie & blain sticking it out!

it’s always so sweet to watch couples take a moment to absorb what just happened once they walk back down the aisle. it always makes for some of our favorite images!
