making a house into a home

By | Personal | 5 Comments

it is a blessing that matt and i are afflicted with the same obsessions (passions?). photography, culture, food, craft, etc and now- architecture. we bought our little two bedroom, one bathroom house this past july as the cornerstone of our 5 to 7 year master plan but once we moved in, a love for our little pocket of the city grew- and we gleefully pushed our little plan off a cliff. we were instantly intrigued by the beauty and possibility of old homes and at the recommendation of some of our most brilliant friends and family members we bought a couple of books to learn about the theories of making a ‘home.’

and now we’re pumped! to say the least. we share new ideas most days at breakfast and usually also after matt gets out of the shower- where he does his most creative thinking, of course. ;) we end up walking around the house with our arms spread out roughly measuring and plotting new windows and nooks. we are lucky that we have such a sweet little floor plan to build our ideas upon and create new efficient spaces perfectly suited to our way of living. of course, it’s all just dreams and speculation right now as we save save save to finance this thing but that’s okay- since our ideas change daily getting started now might stifle the more creative ideas that could come later. that being said, we’re having an awesome time spitballing crazy dreams for stairs and ways to bend natural light to our advantage. we’ve started home inspiration folders and we’re always looking for new blogs and websites with a nod toward the renovated and customized old home.

anyway, we’re excited to chronicle some of our house projects on this blog! hopefully, this is the start of moving back to more personal posts in general because this year we’re determined to have a bit of a life outside of our business. :) it’s not easy because we do love our job so much- honestly, i run straight to the computer every morning to see what new, exciting emails we’ve gotten from all of you while we’ve been asleep! but we’re starting to learn to balance other things we love with our business, like sunshine and other people and architecture and thrift stores ;) and we’re planning on 2010 being a fulfilling balance of our passions. so, here’s to 2010, may it be epic!

amy & jeff are engaged!

aaand we’re back! thanks to our friend clark mackey- the genius behind the asheville web marketing company, sparkdog– we are now rollin legit with a beautifully coded website and blog. most of the content is the same but you’ll probably notice we don’t have two separate sites anymore- everything is all here in one place and we love it!

so now on to all of the images we’ve been dying to share with you this past week! first up- the awesome amy & jeff!

we’d been looking forward to this shoot since getting to know amy and jeff over coffee a couple months ago- their passion for each other, life and creative images was evident and we couldn’t wait to start working with them. when the atlanta botanical gardens were brought up as a possible shoot location i was even more excited. matt and i had been wanting to see the gardens since we moved here but hadn’t had the time- what better way to experience the gardens than to shoot there!? we were excited. the gardens are one of amy and jeff’s favorite places to hang out so they were excellent tour guides! one of jeff’s favorite parts of the gardens is a blue glass sculpture. we shot a lot of images around it but this abstract one was our favorite. to me it has a very 2D design quality to it:

this plant covered walkway was so luscious and bright. if we hadn’t been excited to see so much more of the gardens we would have been great shooting the whole session right here!

ok, on to my favorite image of the day! the indoor gardens were just stunning and the light kicking through the huge glass windows made for a series of images unlike any we’ve shot before. i know that next time we visit the gardens this will be our first stop. the warm smell of the plants was so relaxing and the quiet so refreshing…just thinking about it makes me wish i was there now…

back outside we found a small patch of protected wildflowers. i love the colors in this next image- very fall with a crisp white sky.

towards the end we discovered the children’s play area- our favorite part being this crazy yellow walled slide. amy and jeff were up for a few more images on top of the hundreds we’d already taken (what good sports!) so we jumped in the slide for a final series. i’m so glad we did!

amy and jeff, you two are such an incredible couple. we had a great time hanging out with you guys and we hope to run into you around town sometime (brickstore? sweetwater?). we’re looking forward to your wedding!!
