heather & trey are married!

By | Weddings | No Comments

sometimes it just seems like there is too much wedding inspiration to absorb, incorporate, diy- etc and it’s easy to feel a sense of fatigue or frustration set in as you mindlessly flip through beautiful image after beautiful image on the glossy pages of a magazine or the endless scrolling that is: pinterest (or maybe that’s just my own experience??). while it’s true there is probably always something else that could be done, it’s also true that having the perfect wedding for you means focusing on a few key things- and those change for every couple. it seems best to figure out your nonnegotiables, focus on making those exactly what you want them to be, and then close the computer and enjoy your wedding! a couple of weeks ago we shot a wedding in one of our second-home cities, athens, and it was one of the most beautiful days of fun, energy, smiles and love that i’ve ever been a part of! heather & trey know each other- they know each other’s personalities, priorities and hearts. their day was overflowing with what was most important to them- which, translated, means spending all of their time and energy surrounded by friends and family having the best day of their lives. :) i’ve rarely seen two people so connected and so in their element and comfortable on their wedding day. heather & trey are so naturally engaging and their energy and excitement is so infectious that not a moment of celebration was lost! matt and i found ourselves just as caught up in the celebration as the guests, and we feel so blessed to have been a small part of their perfect wedding!

heather’s cousin’s boyfriend (i hope i have that right!) is a classical pianist and he spent a few minutes playing while the girls were getting ready. so calming and inspiring!

heather stuck with her trademark curls for her wedding day- i loved her natural look!

while the girls sipped champagne at the beautiful, new, hotel indigo, the guys hung out at the rooftop bar at the legendary georgia theatre– classy in the classic city.

heather is stunning.

i love this image of heather and her sweet mom- they have so much fun together!

after a few portraits at the hotel, everyone headed across the street to the foundry for the ceremony:

somehow, trey’s wedding ring was left at the hotel and they quickly improvised with heather’s dad’s college ring! but the MOMENT the ceremony ended one of heather’s bridesmaids flew back to the hotel to get the ring and it was on trey’s finger just minutes after the ceremony ended!

back at hotel indigo, guests gathered in the rialto room ready to cheer on the newlyweds the moment they walked through the doors!

i love this emotional image from heather and her dad’s dance:

heather & trey, you two are so perfect for one another! we had so much fun on your wedding day- thank you so much! we wish you the very best! go dawgs!!

the process

when i was 4 years old i saw the little mermaid for the first time. i was immediately drawn in to the story- i did what i could to make my life as much like ariel’s as possible- i learned every word to every song and even pressed my ankles together while playing in my grandparent’s pool. and, of course, i wanted long, flowing red hair that rippled in the wind, exactly as it did underwater. [seriously, disney!??]

a few years later i started to read the boxcar children series. i found myself hoarding treasures and curling up to sleep imagining myself in an old boxcar and listening to the wind as it found little cracks in the metal walls. whenever i saw a train, i assumed the inside was a cozy home for me to play in and explore.

in high school i found jane austin and though imagining myself in their world was a guilty pleasure, i could not help noticing a few old-world phrases enter my vocabulary and a desire for a simpler, quieter life color my imaginings of my future. i wanted to be able to walk everywhere- to friend’s homes, to ‘town,’ to church- just to leisurely enjoy my little community and share life with others. i was writing college application essays at the time and it really is a miracle that my idealism didn’t overwhelm the readers- but then again, i was applying to art school… ;)

i share all of this to show you how easily i am swept away by stories- anything from an inspiring article to a well-made(?) commercial can end in tears for me. on the way home from every wedding we shoot, matt and i tell each other stories from the day and reminisce about some of our favorite moments almost as if they were our own. we talk about specific moments we captured and the images we are most excited to review and relive. this is the reason we love meeting with and getting to know couples before their wedding- we hear their stories and see them interact and without realizing it, we begin to feel a part of their story and visualize the way we want to capture it all. for me, i imagine whether the shades and themes should be deep and dramatic, bright and warm, soft and romantic, graphic and clean or any other combination their personalities and story inspires. photography is so intimate and as an introvert, it is so much more natural for me to observe my surroundings and allow them to change me and guide me than it is for me to direct or control a situation. because, at the end of the day, i love being lost in someone else’s story. every couple we work with is so different and i feel so privileged to put down my camera at the end of the day and feel like i just captured the most beautiful story. i am so grateful that our clients are so wonderful and open to the way we work. they let us in to the intimate details of such beautiful moments and we are so blessed to capture their stories. i started to write this post to try to put into words my creative process but as i’ve written i’ve just been overwhelmed by the realization that living a day in so many incredible couple’s stories is an enormous gift. so, i’ll wrap up what became an incredibly sappy and personal blog post with a sincere thank you to our most amazing clients for allowing us to do what we do, whether or not we can clearly explain it. ;)

p.s. happy 50th birthday to one of my favorite stories of all time– a series i’ve read and reread until the pages were soft and the bindings were loose. :)

lauren & charles are married!

matt & i first met lauren in october of 2009. she was the on-site coordinator for kyle & chris’s piedmont park wedding and she was SO on the ball and ready to help and answer any question we might have. she helped their wedding run exactly the way she’d imagined it and even though we were busy shooting at the time, we couldn’t help but notice how relaxed kyle was thanks to lauren’s behind the scenes genius! a year later, we were so excited to hear from lauren regarding her own wedding-how flattering to be sought out by someone who knows the industry so well! we set a time to grab drinks with lauren & charles and immediately saw how perfect they are together. their strengths complement one another’s so well and we had a great happy hour discussing everything from our ‘children’ (puppies), to our shared love of athens, to scotch. :)

we knew their wedding day would be perfection- between lauren’s experience as the director of sales at the piedmont room and her decision to bring on the ever-fabulous eliana, of ellyb events, there was no question. (also, krispy kreme was involved and no one is going to argue that fresh doughnuts don’t make even perfection just a little bit sweeter!) lauren & charles have such a timeless, classic style about them and their wedding day reflected that in every way. lauren’s sleek hairstyle and light, clean makeup allowed her natural beauty to shine though- everything about her seemed perfect and effortless.

meanwhile, charles and his closest friends and family spent the afternoon reminiscing and sipping scotch:

when we all arrived at the church, lauren and her best friends passed the last few minutes happily- singing and laughing over shared memories and applying finishing touches before the ceremony.

prior to their wedding day, lauren & charles talked to us about taking all of their portraits together at night. we were all for it! we explained the style of the images would be different- darker and more dramatic- and they were excited to go for it! my favorite image from their outdoor portraits is the first image of this blog post but i really love the drama of all of the shots.

then it was on to the piedmont room for their reception!

my favorite.

appropriately, lauren & charles left their reception in a flurry of snow! even though we’ve had such a mild january, for a moment, it was really winter. :)

lauren & charles, thank you so much for including us in your fabulous wedding day! we had a great time witnessing and capturing your beautiful day!
