kristen & jordan are married!

By | Weddings | 2 Comments

very often matt and i are asked how we like working together, all day, every single day. ;) of course, we wouldn’t have it any other way but it wasn’t always as natural as it is now. working closely on the same projects tends to bring out a little stubbornness in me and, i’ll be honest, a little OCD sometimes too. i want everything the way i picture it and matt feels the exact same way. over the years we’ve had to verbalize to one another what the other’s strengths are and learn to separate our work based on trusting those strengths in each other. it’s not always easy!

having experienced how difficult this can be, we have so much respect for couples who work together. and even more respect for couples who fell in love while working together! actually, kristen & jordan maaay be the only couple we know who has fallen in love while working together. and they weren’t just working at the same company passing in the halls. kristen was a stage manager and producer for many different types of productions at emory while jordan designed the lighting. i imagine this is like matt being in charge of the sun while i’m trying to make the perfect picture- and i’m pretty sure that would actually be way more difficult than what we currently do together. ;) anyway, kristen and jordan became close friends and after a couple of years, went on their first date. it was instantly obvious to kristen & jordan [and everyone around them] that they were meant to be together. i agree! :)

kristen’s dad’s reaction to seeing her for the first time on her wedding day was so sweet:

jordan’s reaction was pretty sweet too! ;)

we took some time for a few couple portraits in their ceremony space before we headed out to explore the grounds around the miller-ward alumni house. i love the uniform frames on these walls- it gives the images such a nice structure!

kristen is just gorgeous! i love the natural beauty in this image:

before we knew it the seats had filled up and it was time for the ceremony.

kristen & jordan had filled the surfaces of the alumni house with images of their relationship as well as their friends and families. as the guests mingled during cocktail hour, they often picked up a frame to look more closely and relive a special time in their own life that they shared with kristen or jordan. it was such a sweet way to bring people together and by the time the reception was to begin it seemed like everyone felt like one big happy family!

meanwhile, the bridesmaids snuck away to be introduced. the holding room:  ;)

kristen & jordan’s friends and family toasted them with poignant, funny and/or embarrassing stories- it was a fun time of remembrance for all:

kristen & jordan, thank you guys so much for having us- we loved capturing you two together surrounded by those who love you the most. we wish you the very best!

lauren & charles are married!

matt & i first met lauren in october of 2009. she was the on-site coordinator for kyle & chris’s piedmont park wedding and she was SO on the ball and ready to help and answer any question we might have. she helped their wedding run exactly the way she’d imagined it and even though we were busy shooting at the time, we couldn’t help but notice how relaxed kyle was thanks to lauren’s behind the scenes genius! a year later, we were so excited to hear from lauren regarding her own wedding-how flattering to be sought out by someone who knows the industry so well! we set a time to grab drinks with lauren & charles and immediately saw how perfect they are together. their strengths complement one another’s so well and we had a great happy hour discussing everything from our ‘children’ (puppies), to our shared love of athens, to scotch. :)

we knew their wedding day would be perfection- between lauren’s experience as the director of sales at the piedmont room and her decision to bring on the ever-fabulous eliana, of ellyb events, there was no question. (also, krispy kreme was involved and no one is going to argue that fresh doughnuts don’t make even perfection just a little bit sweeter!) lauren & charles have such a timeless, classic style about them and their wedding day reflected that in every way. lauren’s sleek hairstyle and light, clean makeup allowed her natural beauty to shine though- everything about her seemed perfect and effortless.

meanwhile, charles and his closest friends and family spent the afternoon reminiscing and sipping scotch:

when we all arrived at the church, lauren and her best friends passed the last few minutes happily- singing and laughing over shared memories and applying finishing touches before the ceremony.

prior to their wedding day, lauren & charles talked to us about taking all of their portraits together at night. we were all for it! we explained the style of the images would be different- darker and more dramatic- and they were excited to go for it! my favorite image from their outdoor portraits is the first image of this blog post but i really love the drama of all of the shots.

then it was on to the piedmont room for their reception!

my favorite.

appropriately, lauren & charles left their reception in a flurry of snow! even though we’ve had such a mild january, for a moment, it was really winter. :)

lauren & charles, thank you so much for including us in your fabulous wedding day! we had a great time witnessing and capturing your beautiful day!

lara & zack are married!

By | Weddings | 3 Comments

when i was 11 years old i was pretty sure i was going to be a fine artist and an eye doctor when i grew up. my interests were soccer and theatre and my favorite food was macaroni and cheese and pickles. everything about me has changed so dramatically since then- except, honestly, pickles maaay still be one of my favorite foods. ;)

when lara was 11 years old she walked into a new school and the very first person she met was her future husband. you guys, lara & zack met when they were ELEVEN! they became close friends quickly and their shared interests kept them very involved in each other’s lives- they had the same friends, shared the same extracurricular activities and even found themselves passionate about the same big issues as they grew up. in 10th grade everything changed- these two best friends started dating. it was a big step for them but was the most natural thing in the world to those who had watched them grow up together. luckily for lara & zack, it was the right move- they’re so obviously deeply connected and in love and their comfort level with one another is such that no one would question them having been the closest of friends for so many years. they are beautiful and rare.

when we were first contacted about shooting lara & zack’s wedding we knew only one thing- they were currently through-hiking the appalachian trail together and wouldn’t be able to meet with us until the october before their new year’s eve wedding. matt & i always do what we can to meet with a couple before we agree to shoot their wedding but in this case it made the most sense to meet with lara’s mom while they were away and then connect with them when they returned. andie, lara’s mom, showed up with adorable pictures and incredible stories of lara & zack and instantly we knew we had to meet these two! we had so many shared interests and passions and their life experiences fascinated us. we quickly decided that, though we’d never made new year’s eve available before, there was no doubt we were going to open it up for lara & zack! when we finally met with them i’m pretty sure i just asked them 1000 questions about their time working on an organic farm, about their passion for locally grown beautifully prepared food, about their time on the AT and all of the beautiful sights and experiences they shared during their time away together- they are fascinating. i could go on and on but i’m starting to realize this is getting rather long…but seriously! these two were a joy to get to know and so much fun to work with on their wedding day. we couldn’t have asked for a better way to ring in the new year!

lara’s family is presbyterian and zack’s family is jewish so lara & zack spent lots of time designing a ceremony that highlights the similarities in the two religions as well as their shared themes of love and unity. the service was unique and personal with both parents walking them down the aisle and remaining with them in support and encouragement through the whole ceremony. it was so clear how much these families love each other and find joy in lara & zack’s relationship:

the chuppah was designed especially for lara & zack and made from zack’s mother’s wedding dress, such an intimate, personal detail:

after the ceremony, guests enjoyed a lively time of catching up and cocktails before they were introduced into the stunning reception space, brilliantly designed by steve bales, creative director at bold american events and catering:

lara’s dad surprised her by playing a song she had written and recorded when she was younger- she was definitely surprised!

somehow the father daughter dance turned into an impromptu family dance- i LOVE it! such a clear picture of how close these two families are:

lara & zack’s parents planned lots of little surprises for them on their wedding day! one of the crowd favorites was the huge tray of whoopie pies brought in from maine:

zack’s dad surprised many of the guests by joining the band for auld lang syne after the big countdown, impressive!

instead of running to a car to exit their reception, lara & zack just walked away with their packs! clever, funny and perfect for them:

lara & zack & families, thank you all so much for trusting us to capture such a wonderful celebration! we feel so blessed to have gotten to know you all. best wishes!
