atoya & sam are engaged!

matt & i first had the pleasure of meeting atoya last spring. at the time it was a quick introduction, as she was just beginning jennifer’s wedding day makeup and i couldn’t wait to start taking images of the process! jennifer’s makeup turned out beautifully and we were once again struck by how many amazing people we get to work with in this industry- love it! so, of course, it was such an honor when we heard from atoya about her own wedding!

fast forward to an overcast, chilly february evening, when we had the pleasure of meeting sam for the first time and taking some engagement pictures with them. we’d been in touch with atoya leading up to their shoot and she expressed their love of the city landscape as well as her attachment to old hollywood, dramatic, black and whites. what a perfect vision for a shoot in midtown in february! the wind helped create a little sass and the city lights allowed us to shoot well into the evening and capture some out-on-the-town, more photojournalistic images as well. it was a great shoot; atoya & sam are so cuddly and sweet together, they were a joy to capture. they also know how to pull off some serious drama which worked so perfectly with her vision! bottom line, it wasn’t until we were done shooting that matt & i realized we were freezing- THAT’S how much we enjoyed our afternoon with atoya & sam. :)

absolutely my favorite:

atoya & sam, you guys are so perfect together. every second of our shoot with you was a joy and you guys were such good sports about all of the crazy locations we had in mind. ;) we really enjoyed working with your vision and we are so excited about your upcoming wedding!

our new plant(life)!

i’m sitting here at my desk (which is the couch), listening to hail bounce around on the front porch. my view from the window immediately to my right is mostly obscured by our huge puppy who insists on fitting into the tight space to spy on our new neighbor’s dog. but i know that eventually she’ll realize that she is stuck and spastically jump backwards to free herself, knocking over everything in her path. i, equally spastically, will grab for my coffee and computer allowing sharpies, stickies and notebooks to land wherever her tail takes them. but then she’ll curl up and fall asleep and the enjoyable calm will return. anyway, the grey skies and bouncy hail- while they relax me they also make me dream of spring. on days like today i always get the urge to work outside and instead find myself drawing out plans and making lists of what i will do the minute the skies clear. it was on a day similar to this that matt & i bundled up and headed to lowes to start our garden.

after passionately explaining how fruitful our future garden will be and, once i calmed down, proving i had a plan (i don’t always, it was a fair question), matt agreed to a little building project: a seed starting station.

in case i haven’t mentioned it in a while- matt is so awesome at projects! since we don’t have a lot of space we decided to modify an existing piece of furniture and hang a fixture underneath it to provide light for our baby seedlings. we also ended up using cookie cooling racks to create a base for the plants to sit on- how awesome (-ly ghetto) is that!? look how dedicated matt is, working late into the night (or not, it gets dark at like 6:00 these days- ew! but that doesn’t take away from how super my husband is):

i potted up seeds while matt finished with the wiring (scary!) and before we knew it we had a legit little setup! but then, when the little guys started sprouting, we decided it looked like we were growing, um, weed, so i decided to be very clear with anyone who came through our door. except the cable guy- i left him wondering about us…both at home in the middle of the day…in our pajamas…seedlings in a dark corner of our dining room…bahahaa:

so i hope to keep you updated with good news regarding the garden but i’ll be sure to also let you know if the seed starting is a huge failure. for now i’m just so excited to watch the little guys grow and nibble the baby leaves as i thin the weaker plants out (…no waste, right?) and around mid march if i have something left to transplant that will be fantastic. :)

melissa & thea are engaged!

you know how we all talk about trying to really, intentionally, LIVE life? it’s something i’m working on this year- taking in every moment and engaging with it. so many small moments in everyday life are really incredible and i want to notice that as often as possible. as a wedding photographer who tries so hard to embrace this mindset every saturday, i think i need to start living my day to day life with the same intentionality. so that’s my little morning tangent- thanks to melissa & thea, who, as i edited their photos last week, helped me come to this realization. :)

when it comes to living every second of life, melissa & thea are my new role models! every little bit of contact we’ve had with melissa has been overflowing with joy- her love of thea, her friends and all of the little things too. she and thea met us for dinner just after they got engaged and right away we could see their deep connection and passion for living life together. melissa is adorable and outgoing- full of laughs for thea’s quiet but witty comments and together, they’re truly a wonderful couple. we had a great afternoon running around the westside- matt & i stuffed into at least three layers of long johns and melissa & thea looking classy and carefree, showing us, once again, their ability to embrace every moment:

obsessed with this next shot that matt snagged really quickly between locations. i’m not really sure why but i think it’s because they look like movie stars:

melissa & thea, we feel so honored that you chose us to capture you together! we are looking forward to your wedding day- it’s going to be amazing! :)
