the yorks!

matt’s freshman year at georgia he lived with a few older, wiser, more responsible guys from his hometown- needless to say i think he was their entertainment! it seems from the stories i’ve heard it was an awesome living situation and a lot of fun was had by all.

as they all graduated, matt moved on to his sophomore year of college. while he played guitar & perfected his gainer, his old roommates were marrying their sweethearts & starting families. when matt and i got engaged we spent some time with them and learned what an amazing marriage looked like for young couples who loved life as much as we do. although we don’t see them as often as we’d like, they’ve had a great impact on matt personally as well as on our marriage and we are so grateful for their example!

that being said, we were able to catch up with one of those families just the other day for a day shoot with their adorable little ashton! wes & blakely are the best parents ever and really have fun with ashton- who is quite the curious little man! curious about the cool grass, the big cameras in his face, the skinny guy with crazy black hair who kept making strange faces at him and jumping around… matt loves kids, haha, but really, anything that was going on around ashton caught his attention and wonder. he was the perfect little model! we had a great time exploring the part of the emory campus where blakely works- we had no idea how beautiful it was back there! we’ll be returning for sure. great call guys!

first up, my favorite image from this shoot, taken right at the beginning- ashton is learning to trust us here and i love his slightly doubtful expression! matt won him over shortly after this with a crazy dance/jump move similar to this.

noel & michael are engaged!

noel & michael are our kind of people- they laugh and goof off together but, equally well, they can pull a seriously fierce pokerface- something they assured us from the beginning they couldn’t do! oh, they were so wrong! …in a good way!

we met them at the gorgeous berry college campus for an afternoon of exploring the area & photographing it. noel was an excellent tour guide- she knows everything there is to know about the different parts of berry and just listening to her talk about the place where she met michael we could tell it holds a special place in her heart. they showed us all around campus- where they lived, where they had their first kiss, where they used to talk all night and watch the stars- it was awesome to get such a beautiful picture of how their relationship developed!

before we knew it the sun was setting and we were hurrying up to the retreat center to catch it! we only got a few shots off before the sun dropped behind a few clouds and then finally, set, but they are some of our favorites of the day- i am getting ahead of myself! picture time!

first up- we’d heard from some friends that there was one little service road that would be absolutely essential for images and sure enough, it was on noel’s list of places to stop. and oh my gosh now i know why- it’s stunning!

13_berry_college_wedding_042009

you know- they’re just workin the sun flare! after postponing their original session due to rain they ended up with the most perfect day!

12_berry_college_wedding_042009

yup- still on that pretty little service road! i love how direct this image is:

it is always so sweet to shoot a couple where the guy is so enamored with his lady that he cannot help but grin. that guy is michael- all the way. noel simply makes him the happiest guy ever!

08_berry_college_wedding_042009

remember how they claimed to not pull off serious!? i think this proves otherwise! ;)

07_berry_college_wedding_042009

so we were all sort-of amazed by this little piece of grass that seemed to be growing out of a whitewashed brick wall. who knows how we saw it to begin with but after we all examined it and moved on matt had the brilliance to grab noel’s ring so we could incorporate the little guy in the shoot! so sweet :)

the retreat center used to be a dairy farm and the renovation of the white buildings has left this beautiful landscape with a timeless quality.

04_berry_college_wedding_042009

so this was a little bit of a friendly competition that turned into a series of hilarious images- a little competition can be healthy!

03_berry_college_wedding_042009

my favorite image of this shoot- really, my favorite image we’ve made in a long time. so soft and dreamy! makes me want to do an entire shoot in this style! i’ll have to add that to my list- right under plant a vegetable garden, start an etsy shop & take spontaneous roadtrips- haha, one day!

02_berry_college_wedding_042009

we wanted to end this post with one of the retreat center images we grabbed while the sun was out- doesn’t this just look otherworldly!? such a beautiful landscape- i hope we can shoot at berry again!

noel & michael, you two are a blast. we had a great time hanging out with you guys, getting to know you & your story and grabbing some images. we’re so excited for your wedding this fall but hopefully we’ll run into each other before then! :)

lesley & michael are married!

By | Weddings | 7 Comments

there’s something so beautiful about small southern towns. everyone knows one another- nothing goes by unnoticed, uncomplimented or without a hug. it’s a comforting environment- generations of families reside less than a mile from one another and friends are close and numerous! …and when everyone comes together for a wedding, the love and support is tangible.

when matt first dropped me off to start shooting at lesley’s bridal brunch the door was immediately flung open and my purse was taken to another room. i was introduced to the hostess and then to a few of her friends who had also arrived before the bride and her ladies. they sat around and chatted about family and friends while i photographed the table settings and chatted with the sweet older couple who was catering the meal. the ladies arrived full of smiles ready to start the day. and they started it right! with ice cream parfaits to be exact! how awesome!?  :)

we arrived at the church and even though we’d shot there before i was again surprised at how much this church aligns with any crayon picture of a church i would have drawn as a kid. to me it’s the quintessential southern ‘church’ and it’s so beautiful!

once we were settled inside the bridal room the girls had a few minutes to relax before the getting ready fun was to begin! as they chilled out and talked about makeup and marriage i took a few minutes to grab some details of lesley’s wedding jewelry. and we all know how i LOVE doing that! this mini chandelier made for a unique backdrop which i loved!

17_lesleymichael

the ladies slowly started getting ready and lesley was torn between leaving her makeup very natural (michael’s fave!) and adding extra mascara. she decided to compromise and add just a touch! perfect!

placing the veil is usually when the reality of what’s about to happen really sets in. i love lesley’s calm and peaceful expression here:

14_lesleymichael

before the ceremony tears sprung up in the eyes of lesley’s older sister. she was so happy for lesley and so helpful the whole day, it was a sweet moment:

13_lesleymichael

just before lesley and her dad walked down the aisle she stole a glance at her reflection in the foyer. i remember this from my wedding day too- i kept forgetting that i looked like a bride and was really caught off guard every time i saw my reflection with the veil and white everywhere! surreal for sure.

12_lesleymichael

in case i forgot to mention it in the last five seconds i LOVE working with matt. we are able to separate and capture two very different aspects of the action and when i saw this picture he made from the front of the church as lesley and her dad walked just past her mother and grandmother, i fell in love.

11_lesleymichael

after the ceremony we took lesley and michael out to the front of the church to grab some portraits under the massive oak trees. trees work so naturally as frames in an image- i love how matt’s portrait came out!

10_lesleymichael

and of course i’m up close grabbing little details! ;) the wind created some nice movement in this shot, so romantic!

09_lesleymichael

so i decided to experiment a little and see if i could create a romantic (INTENTIONALLY) out of focus image. and i love how it came out, maybe i’ll be trying this again!

08_lesleymichael

michael is a rather stoic guy but i love this little smile we captured! this image is just about happiness and love:

07_lesleymichael

i love the way lesley clutched michael’s jacket during the first dance, their personalities compliment each other so well:

this is a family portrait taken by matt. this moment just happened and he grabbed it- and i LOVE it!

04_lesleymichael

we noticed the wedding party slowly disappear which usually only means on thing…yup! the car. here michael’s brother watches as their dad stretches over the top of the car to leave them a message for the getaway!

03_lesleymichael

and they’re off!

lesley & michael, thank you so much for including us in your wedding day! we had a great time capturing your friends and families as they loved on you guys. best wishes!
